Diving Into the World of Genshin Impact

Our guide for new players in Genshin Impact has been crafted with valuable inputs from /sunmilk/, the creator of the Elemental Combat System Chart.

Setting Your Footprints

Available on a variety of platforms such as PS4, PC, Switch, IOS, and Android mobile devices, Genshin Impact offers a remarkably accessible gaming experience. Creating a miHoYo account is recommended as it provides the convenience of accessing your game data across various devices. Post unlocking Adventure Rank 16, indulge in co-op activities with players from other platforms, given you share the same region.

Starting off, you can choose between two characters presented during the opening scene – Lumine, the female twin, and Aether, the male twin. Despite the default names, you are free to retain or change the moniker of your chosen Traveler.

As you progress, new characters with diverse elemental capabilities and unique movesets will be available for you to unlock. Visit our Playable Characters page for a detailed overview of each character. Our About page on Genshin Impact will acquaint you with the varied concepts and game mechanics that the game incorporates.

Understanding Combat Mechanics

Genshin Impact showcases a real-time action-based combat system where the player’s party includes four characters. While it’s possible to switch party members intermittently, changes cannot be made during combat or when entering dungeons. Hence, planning is crucial. Each character possesses a unique weapon type and element, with weapon types categorized into Swords, Bows, Claymores, Catalysts, and Polearms. The elemental abilities differ per character and can be combined with your normal attack series to execute potent combos.

Utilize Sense Mode

The expansive open-world of Genshin Impact may initially seem overwhelming to novice players. This is where the Sense Mode comes to your rescue. Look for the Sense Mode icon, located on the upper left corner on the right side of the mini-map. By activating this mode, you’ll be able to trace the paths the spirits have taken, uncovering hidden secrets, clues, and even spotting dangerous objects such as flammable barrels. The spirit paths appear blue, while quests are marked yellow, making it easier for you to navigate through the game.

Managing Duplicate Characters and Equipment

The journey to obtain characters and equipment in Genshin Impact isn’t solely reliant on exploration, looting, or quest progression; it also involves the usage of Wishes or Gacha Pulls. This method significantly enhances your chances of unlocking potent Playable Characters, Materials, Weapons, Artifacts, and more. Should you stumble upon a duplicate character or item, you can consume the duplicate to strengthen the original. For instance, merging a duplicate character with its primary counterpart can help rank up their Constellation, subsequently unlocking new upgrades and modifying the character’s Talents.

Don’t Ignore Your Inbox!

Often players overlook the messages in their inbox; if you notice a red dot next to the mailbox icon, it’s an indication of unread messages. Navigating to the left-hand side of the menu and clicking on the mailbox could lead you to find delightful rewards provided by the game’s developer and publisher, miHoYo.

The Art of Cooking

In the vast landscape of Teyvat, you’ll engage with various NPCs, encounter antagonistic characters, amass a plethora of items, and unveil secrets. Among the collectibles, you’ll encounter Food and Ingredients. Certain food items like an Apple or Sunsettia can be consumed without cooking, offering benefits like HP restoration for a single character. Numerous cooking spots are scattered across the map, be it within towns or outside. These spots allow you to create dishes that offer robust buffs and effects, mostly applicable to your active party. Some cooking spots need to be lit using a pyro ability character like Amber.

The cooking process is straightforward. Choose a recipe, aim for the sweet spot on the cooking bar to achieve “Perfect” quality, leading to greater benefits. After cooking a minimum number of dishes, you can unlock auto-cook, eliminating the need for a mini-game, saving time. Also, consider selecting a character before starting to cook, as certain characters offer bonuses depending on the dish being cooked.

Progression and Leveling

In Genshin Impact, there are various elements to level up: Adventure Level, which influences the quests or dungeon trials you can undertake, Character Levels to boost base stats, Combat Talents to enhance specific talents, Statue leveling to unlock rewards including Stamina increase, and Weapon leveling.

Notably, Playable Characters do not level up as a party. You earn items like Wanderer’s Advice for completing quests or discovering chests, which grant character experience to level up your preferred character. In addition to this, you’ll also need to expend a certain amount of Mora, the game’s common currency.

The Ascension Path

Reaching the maximum level of a character or weapon in Genshin Impact doesn’t signify an end, but the beginning of a new progression phase, termed Ascension. A character or equipment can be ascended only upon reaching the max level of the current phase. It involves farming and locating specific items necessary for ascending, permitting you to push your character or weapon up to six times, reaching a maximum level of 90.

Each ascension phase comes with a new maximum level:

  • Base – Max Lv. 20
  • Ascension Phase 1 – Max Lv. 40
  • Ascension Phase 2 – Max Lv. 50
  • Ascension Phase 3 – Max Lv. 60
  • Ascension Phase 4 – Max Lv. 70
  • Ascension Phase 5 – Max Lv. 80
  • Ascension Phase 6 – Max Lv. 90

Ascending doesn’t merely boost stats and grant new bonuses; it also unveils other features such as the unlocking of the first Passive Talent of a character at phase 1.

Claim Your Adventure Rewards

While exploring Mondstadt, ensure you regularly converse with Katheryne, the Adventurer’s Guild receptionist. Depending on your Adventure Rank, she offers rewards that are easy to miss but incredibly beneficial.

Leverage Artifacts

Artifacts serve to elevate a character’s stats. Each character can be equipped with a set of five artifacts, and each set provides specific 2 and 4 bonuses. Pay close attention to these bonuses as they can substantially amplify your character’s effectiveness. Duplicated artifacts can be utilized to enhance your current artifacts for each character, so avoid destroying or selling them until your current or best artifact is fully upgraded.

Beware of the Stamina!

One critical aspect of Genshin Impact is the Stamina bar. It governs most combat actions such as attacks, talent activations, evasions, sprinting, jumping, as well as swimming, gliding, and climbing. The Stamina bar, displayed on the right side of your central character, requires careful management, especially in battle scenarios. It is possible to momentarily retreat and let your stamina replenish before rejoining the fight.

However, activities like climbing and swimming pose a different challenge, as these rapidly drain your stamina. It’s essential to avoid overusing these mechanics, as an exhausted stamina bar could lead to dire consequences like drowning while swimming or falling while climbing. So, it’s crucial to examine your surroundings thoroughly before venturing to swim a long distance or scale a high wall, tree, or hill.

Deciphering Constellations

In the game, Constellations represent character upgrades, functioning as passive skills. These can be unlocked or obtained by acquiring duplicate characters. The main character diverges slightly, requiring item procurement from main quests, rewards, or purchases from the Souvenir Shop in Mondstadt. Each Character boasts six Constellations, which help enhance their elemental skill or elemental burst abilities.

Weapons: Enhance and Refine

In Genshin Impact, each character uses a unique weapon type, divided into five categories: Swords, Bows, Claymores, Catalysts, and Polearms. The weapon system resembles the Artifacts system, but offers the option to Enhance or Refine your weapons. Duplicates can be used to Refine the same weapon, thereby increasing its bonus. Conversely, Enhancing a weapon uses up Enhancement Ores you find in the game, bolstering your weapon’s damage. Maximizing damage often involves enhancing 4 or 5-star weapons and equipping them to characters with matching stats.

Loot Everything

As you navigate the game, be sure to collect all items you encounter. Genshin Impact’s inventory offers 30,000 slots for items, allowing you to store weapons, ingredients, materials, artifacts, and more for future use. As these items will likely be used over time, it’s beneficial to stock up.

Characters and Wish System

When beginning your Genshin Impact journey, start with the main quests to unlock characters with powerful abilities. Following the initial main quests will allow you to unlock characters like Amber, Kaeya, and Lisa. You can also unlock characters through limited-time events or the Wish system.

Although Genshin Impact is a free-to-play game, it offers microtransactions through a currency called Primogems. You can earn these by exploring, completing achievements, finishing daily quests, or purchasing a monthly pass. The Wish system does not guarantee specific characters, but it provides a rotating selection of banner promotions with potential character, weapon, and item rewards.

Curiosity is Rewarded

Genshin Impact is designed to reward exploration. With hidden puzzles and items scattered throughout the map, being curious and attentive can yield significant advantages.

Elemental Combos

The game features seven unique elements:

  • Anemo (Wind)
  • Geo (Earth)
  • Electro (Lightning)
  • Dendro (Nature)
  • Hydro (Water)
  • Pyro (Fire)
  • Cryo (Frost)

Each playable character harnesses one of these elements, which can be combined for powerful effects. For example, using a Pyro ability following an Anemo ability creates a flame whirlwind around the enemy. Combining Hydro with Electro attacks can inflict even more damage on ‘Wet’ enemies. It’s advisable to experiment with these elemental combinations for optimal combat strategies.

Party Passive Bonuses

Upon reaching Mondstadt and obtaining additional playable characters, you can customize your party of four. Be sure to check Elemental Resonance in the Party Setup menu for Party Passive Bonuses available based on your party composition:

  • Enduring Rock: Two Geo elemental characters – Increases resistance to interruption, When protected by a shield, increases Attack DMG by 15%

Find Statues of the Seven

As you explore, look for Statues of the Seven, which emit a red beam of light. Upon locating and unlocking a statue (often requiring overcoming a challenge), you can use it for fast travel and rewards by offering Anemoculus. Rewards include Adventure EXP, increased Stamina, Primogems, and more.

Seek Out the Seelies

Seelies, blue wisps scattered throughout the world, guide you towards hidden chests containing valuable loot.

Activate Teleport Waypoints

Teleport Waypoints, which allow for fast travel across Teyvat, are indicated by blue markers on the map once activated. Activating these waypoints for the first time rewards you with items such as Primogems.

Expeditions

Unused characters can be deployed on expeditions to collect materials and earn rewards. Katheryne, the receptionist of the Adventurer’s Guild in Mondstadt, can set up these expeditions. The longer the expedition, the greater the rewards. Keep in mind that deployed characters can’t be added to your active party during their expedition. Some characters, like Bennet, have passive bonuses that reduce expedition time when deployed in Mondstadt.
